Swiatek Defeats Rybakina in Toronto to Win National Bank Open

Addressing recent doubts surrounding her current form, Iga Swiatek broke her year-long championship dry spell by capturing the National Bank Open title in Toronto on Thursday. The Polish star produced a commanding performance to claim her first trophy of the season.

Seeded seventh in the tournament, Swiatek needed just 75 minutes to dismantle second-seeded Elena Rybakina, taking the final in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. The victory provided a sharp contrast to her previous encounters against Rybakina this year.

Swiatek delivered an exceptionally clean performance, landing 80 percent of her first serves and capitalizing on break-point opportunities by converting four out of five attempts. She registered 11 winners against eight unforced errors, expanding her head-to-head advantage over Rybakina to seven wins across 13 career encounters.

Prior to her triumph in Toronto, Swiatek had experienced a difficult campaign, failing to reach a single WTA final earlier in the season. Her Grand Slam runs had also stalled, yielding only a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open—where she lost to Rybakina—alongside a fourth-round finish at the French Open and a third-round exit at Wimbledon.

Having secured just one major title across her previous nine Grand Slam appearances, the Polish player had faced persistent questions regarding her baseline consistency. During her trophy presentation, Swiatek expressed pure delight at overcoming those hurdles, noting her satisfaction with how she performed throughout the week.
