PBC Member Demands Debate on Proposal for New Provinces

A senior representative of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has formally called on the country's top legal body to reconvene for comprehensive discussions on the rising debate surrounding the creation of new provinces. According to reports from Dawn Pakistan, Advocate Salahuddin Ahmed submitted a two-page letter to PBC Vice Chairman Pir Masood Chishty requesting an immediate meeting on the issue.

The renewed debate over provincial boundaries was sparked by recent remarks from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who advocated for the formation of additional administrative units. The proposal quickly gained further political weight after the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), publicly endorsed the idea during a press briefing the following day.

In his letter, Ahmed emphasized that as the premier organization representing Pakistan's legal community, the bar council must take an active and deliberative stance on such a critical constitutional matter. He reminded the leadership of an earlier resolution passed by the council on August 7, 2026, which asserted that any restructuring of provinces must strictly adhere to constitutional mechanisms and involve nationwide political agreement.

That previous resolution had also outlined plans for a multi-party seminar aimed at building national consensus to bolster the federation and enhance administrative governance. With the issue once again dominating public discourse, Ahmed argued that the legal body must reassert its role in safeguarding constitutional norms during ongoing national political discussions.
