Punjab Launches Piped Water Pilot Scheme in Six Districts

Low-income communities across Punjab are set to receive prioritized access to piped tap water following new provincial directives aimed at upgrading clean water infrastructure.

During a high-level review meeting on Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved a pilot project designed to distribute potable water directly through underground pipelines. The initiative targets six diverse districts representing North, Central, and South Punjab: Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Rajanpur, Chakwal, and Murree/Kotli Sattian.

Currently, residents in many parts of the province rely on local filtration plants, bottled water facilities, and mobile water bowsers for clean supply. According to reports from Business Recorder, the new piped-water scheme seeks to create a more permanent and sustainable distribution network.

To ensure effective rollout, the Chief Minister instructed regional officials to conduct detailed consultations with key stakeholders. Authorities must engage deputy commissioners, experts from the Public Health Engineering Department, and leadership from Water and Sanitation Agencies across the designated districts before implementation begins.

Sharif emphasized that economically vulnerable households must be placed at the forefront of the clean drinking water programme, ensuring that basic utility services reach those who need them most.
