Ben Shelton Dominates Montreal Masters to Reach Last 16

Defending champion Ben Shelton delivered a commanding performance at the ATP Montreal Masters on Friday, dispatching Belgian rival Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-2 to secure his place in the round of 16.

The fifth-seeded American needed just over an hour to settle the contest, capitalizing on a heavily depleted draw to strengthen his bid for back-to-back titles on Canadian soil.

Shelton was virtually untouchable on his delivery throughout the 65-minute encounter, hammering down eight aces and ripping through three consecutive love holds during a dominant second set. Bergs struggled to maintain rhythm under pressure, hampered by costly foot faults and a flurry of double-faults that handed the American crucial break opportunities.

Reflecting on his victory, the 23-year-old noted that he managed the match well after adjusting to his opponent's strong opening service game. Once he broke Bergs and built an early buffer, Shelton kept his foot on the accelerator to seal a comfortable win.

The victory marks Shelton's first appearance in a round-of-16 stage this season. As the highest-ranked competitor left in the tournament field, he now turns his attention to a fourth-round showdown against rising Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca.

Fonseca earned his spot in the last 16 by eliminating ninth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud in straight sets, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3. The young Brazilian overturned an early 4-2 deficit in the opening set before seizing command in the second, sealing the upset on his second match point with a clean winner into an exposed court.
