Ben Shelton Defeats Joao Fonseca to Reach Montreal Quarter-Finals

Defending champion Ben Shelton maintained his perfect set record at the ATP Montreal Masters, securing a spot in the quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory against Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca. The 23-year-old American left-hander closed out the match 6-3, 7-6(7/3) on his second of four match points after Fonseca sent a return into the net.

The tenth-ranked Shelton struggled alongside his opponent against strong evening gusts, which made footing unpredictable throughout the contest. Shelton noted afterwards that overcoming tough elements against a high-caliber opponent demanded sheer grit rather than flawless execution.

Fonseca saw his momentum falter during the second set despite establishing a 3-1 lead at 40-30. The Brazilian landed awkwardly on his ankle following an overhead miss, an incident that proved costly as he struggled to regain consistency. Over the course of the match, Fonseca accumulated 32 unforced errors while adjusting to the severe wind.

Shelton’s triumph marks his ninth consecutive victory on Canadian soil. Having navigated the draw without dropping a set, the World No. 10 moves into a last-eight showdown against Czech 13th seed Jakub Mensik.

Mensik booked his quarter-final place earlier by defeating Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5. The Czech player sealed his victory with a winning lob on match point to setup his upcoming clash with the American defending champion.
