President Zardari Approves High Court Judicial Appointments

A weeks-long impasse between the Presidency and the PML-N led administration came to an end on Tuesday following official executive assent from President Asif Ali Zardari for a wave of judicial appointments across Pakistan's high courts. The move prompted swift swearing-in ceremonies for sixteen additional judges, alongside several permanent judicial confirmations across multiple provinces.

The fresh appointments comprise nineteen additional judges inducted for a one-year period starting from their oath-taking dates. Among these, ten judges were allocated to the Lahore High Court, while the high courts of Islamabad, Balochistan, and Sindh each received three additional judges. While sixteen took their oaths on Tuesday, the three remaining additional judges for the Sindh High Court are set to be sworn in on Wednesday.

In addition to the temporary appointments, five permanent judges took their official oaths following presidential confirmation. This included four permanent judges assigned to the Peshawar High Court and one to the Lahore High Court, according to details reported by Dawn Pakistan.

The executive actions also extended beyond judicial swearing-in ceremonies to address legislative matters and executive council structures. President Zardari green-lit measures to equalize the perks and privileges of judges sitting on the Federal Shariat Court with those of the Supreme Court, while also clearing several pending legislative bills.

Furthermore, the President formally approved the appointment of Haroon Akhtar as an adviser to the Prime Minister. The comprehensive set of approvals signals a broader effort to clear administrative bottlenecks between the head of state and the federal cabinet.
