Karachi Celebratory Gunfire Leaves 2 Dead and 94 Wounded

Unrestricted celebratory gunfire during Independence Day celebrations in Karachi resulted in tragic casualties across the metropolis, leaving at least two people dead and nearly a hundred others wounded. Emergency medical facilities across the city received dozens of victims struck by stray bullets late Thursday night into Friday morning.

According to Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed, casualty numbers were distributed among major medical centres. Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre admitted 53 injured individuals, while Abbasi Shaheed Hospital received 24 victims, and Civil Hospital treated 17 patients. Among the fatalities confirmed from aerial firing were a man from PIB Colony and a young infant. A separate incident involving a fatal gunshot wound sustained by a woman was categorized by law enforcement as accidental gun discharge rather than celebratory firing.

Rescue services reported widespread incidents spanning numerous neighborhoods in Karachi. Rescue provider Edhi noted initial figures of 86 casualties from stray bullets, which included 17 minors, 10 women, and 59 adult men. Bullet hits were documented in diverse areas including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, North Nazimabad, Orangi Town, and Defence, highlighting the dangerous scope of the celebratory tradition.

In response to the wave of violence, law enforcement launched target enforcement actions in the city's East district. Officials confirmed the arrest of ten individuals suspected of participating in dangerous aerial shooting, with several firearms confiscated during the operations to curb unlawful festivities.
